Some Views Of The English Countryside, From The Car

There is a wonderful poem, by Robert Louis Stevenson, called From A Railway Carriage

Some of these glimpses of Britain in the autumn sunshine reminded me of the last line of the poem, "Each a glimpse then gone for ever." The full poem is below.

As these are from the road they contain crash barriers and other structures not necessarily of great beauty.

Faster than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
And charging along like troops in a battle,
All through the meadows the horses and cattle:
All of the sights of the hill and the plain
Fly as thick as driving rain;
And ever again, in the wink of an eye,
Painted stations whistle by.

Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,
All by himself and gathering brambles;
Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;
And there is the green for stringing the daisies!
Here is a cart run away in the road
Lumping along with man and load;
And here is a mill and there is a river:
Each a glimpse and gone for ever!

Signs Of Autumn

Children are back in school and the conkers are falling from the trees both sure signs of autumn and, the chances are, that the children will be collecting the conkers and have games of 'conkers'. Conkers
Red knuckles are to be expected as the game progresses.

Conkers are the seeds of the horse chestnut tree.
Here is a beauty still partly encased in its spiky shell.

 And here is the flower from a few months ago, isn't nature amazing?

Ladybird On Sunflower

Maybe this ladybird was enjoying the sun, or maybe looking for somewhere to sleep.
Either way it looked splendid in the autumn light.

Equals

Today is the Autumnal Equinox.
Equal day and night across the globe.

From tomorrow the northern hemisphere will begin to have more dark than daylight hours.
That being said, the sunsets and dawns do extend the lighter/dusk hours (on less cloudy days).

This was the sunset this evening.

300 Years Of Landscaping

Capability Brown and his  to the British countryside is being celebrated up and down the country.

Many large historic houses are having embroidery exhibitions that celebrate how the British landscape has been shaped by Brown.

At this house, out in the 'landscape' there are mirrors to give you a different 'view' of the landscape.
The folly in the background of the photo is designed to draw the eye across the landscape to make you look out and see how much land the owner had.

London's Burning

This evening there was a large fire in London to commemorate the Great Fire of London which happened 350 years ago.
Great Fire of London

These are not my photos, but do give an idea of the scale of the original fire and how terrifying it must have been.

Lots of stones, sun and waves, the sound the waves make as they crash on the stones is amazing.

Big Sur California

Love this wonderful place.

You can see whales as they pass by and you can sit and smell the eucalyptus.
